Correct Sizing for Blog Images

What is the correct size for the Preview image that will correspond correctly with the overall blog post preview page? My rectangular images become distorted on my preview page, and 1080×1080 square images will look good for a moment on the main page, then become blurry again and look terrible as the overall image at the beginning of the blog post.
